List of Approved Providers and Courses
As at April 2024, this list comprises the only approved providers of pharmacy education and training, and the courses approved/accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council.
In terms of Section 34 of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974, the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is responsible for approving pharmacy education/training programmes and institutions. No person or institution may provide pharmacy education and training without being approved by the SAPC. As at April 2024, the profession and members of the public are advised of the following approved providers.
Bachelor of Pharmacy (NQF Level 8)
Nelson Mandela University, North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), Rhodes University, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Limpopo, University of KwaZulu-Natal (Westville Campus), University of the Western Cape, and University of the Witwatersrand.
Certificate of Qualification: Pharmacist’s Assistant Basic (NQF Level 3) and Post-Basic (NQF Level 4)
The National Certificate: Pharmacist Assistance (Basic) and the Further Education and Training Certificate: Pharmacist Assistance (Learner Post-Basic) both had a last date for new enrolments of 30 June 2024, with the teach-out period ending 30 June 2027. Approved providers include Health Science Academy (Pty) Ltd., Pharmacy Healthcare Academy, Pharmacy Training and Development Project (Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University), and S Buys Academy (Pty) Ltd.
Occupational Certificate: Pharmacist’s Assistant (Basic) NQF Level 4 and Post-Basic NQF Level 5
S Buys Academy (Pty) Ltd. is approved to offer the Occupational Certificate: Pharmacist’s Assistant (Basic) and Post-Basic qualifications.
Short Courses
Approved short course providers include Health Advance Institute, Health Science Academy, Insight Medicine Information, Pharmacy Development Academy, North-West University, Pharmacy Education International cc, Pharmacy Training and Development Project, Public Health Institute of South Africa, Quad Pharmaceutical CC, S Buys Academy, University of Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela University, Geozone Environmental (Pty) Ltd, University of the Witwatersrand, Tshwane University of Technology, and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, covering topics from dispensing courses for health professionals to immunisation and injection technique short courses, medicine registration courses, and safe handling of healthcare waste.
